Peak

Campaign / Product

User Interface

For this project, I sought to develop a project that could be launched on Kickstarter, working through the concept, branding, and execution.  I decided to create an in-home game streaming device that would seek to
fill the spot of the discontinued Steam Link hardware, allowing gamers to stream games from their PC to elsewhere in their home, replacing the
need for a traditional console.

Brand & Product

Starting with the product design, I sought to create a body that would distinguish itself from the other consoles or console-like devices, both in shape and color. As the design developed, I choose to emphasis the triangle-shaped cutout with a pale orange light, which serves as both a power indicator, a power button (though a touch sensor in the receptacle), and as the primary brand element.

This shape, as well as the form factor and angles of the device, where used as the basis for wordmark and other brand elements. The name
Peak evokes both the shape of the device, as well as the idea of "peak performance," since this device would stream games with remarkably
low latency.

Since there are already dominant market leaders in the world of game consoles with associated colors, I choose brand colors that stood distinct from all of them, so that this device would stand out as something new and different, not to be confused with traditional consoles.

Rather than relying on an in-home wifi network or a wired LAN connection, the Peak device projects its own local network that a nearby PC can connect to for streaming. The device uses an operating system based on the Android Open Source Project, and would run both the Steam Link and Moonlight apps to allow game streaming from a PC.

Without heavy processing needs, since the host PC will be the one rendering and processing the game, the body of the Peak device can be compact and easily fit on a TV stand.

User Interface

The Peak brand is heavily reflected in its user interface. With its unique brand colors and triangular elements present throughout the system, Peak’s interface distinguishes itself from the devices of other major market players and reflects the unique capabilities of this device. However, despite its strongly branded look, the interface retains a simplicity crucial to allowing a smooth user experience.
